FYI… There are several folks in our church that serve on committees at the Presbytery level. They are good contacts for us as they carry our voices to the broader church. Let them know if you have an idea, a concern, or just want to hear what their committee is up to. They are:
Jesse Thornton- Committee on Ministry, This committee serves as pastor and counselor of ministers. They also facilitate relations between congregations, ministers and Presbytery.
Rebecca Villarreal- Chair of Education and Congregation Nurture Division, This division strengthens congregational life and enables congregations to nurture their members by addressing training and curriculum appropriate for their needs.
Pat Moyer- General Council, This is a committee which does long range planning, supervises the committees and divisions, and plans Presbytery meetings.
Barbara Montemayor and Mary Cloud- Camp, Conference, and Retreat Committee, This committee develops camp and conference programs consistent with the mission of the Presbytery.

Understanding the Bible Last week I was at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary taking a class on Biblical Interpretation. It’s a daunting task to attempt to interpret the Bible. Men and women have been trying for thousands of years and yet there is still much written on the subject. I went with many questions. Among them:
- If the books of the Bible were written thousands of years ago for people in middle- eastern culture, is it relevant to us today?
- If it is relevant to us, how literally should we get in applying it to us? (Jesse spoke last Sunday of passages talking about women keeping quiet and keeping their heads covered!)
- When one verse is taken out of a passage and used to explain a current world problem, are we just making the Bible say what we want it to?
- Does the Bible contain passages that are contradictory? If so, why?
- How can one group of theologians derive one message and another group, a completely different message
- Is interpreting the Bible possible or is it all just conjecture?
I hoped to get answers to some of my questions. I did come back with information that is helpful in my quest for understanding. I did meet new friends and visit with old ones. I did come home with a bunch of new resources. God Bless You and Happy New Year!
