Flowers Donated
Thanks a bunch to Peggy Steiner for her generous donation of silk flowers to our church. With all the gatherings and festivities we have they will certainly be put to good use. Thanks Peggy!

Worship Bags
Lori Weedon has graciously taken on the job as “Minister over Worship Bags.” For kids 3 years – Jr. High we have bags hanging in the Narthex with magazines, a worship bulletin with scriptural activities which match the lectionary, toys, candies, etc. Thanks Lori for your service to this ministry!

PAT'S PRIDE
I'm so excited when I think about all that we have to look forward to in the next few weeks.
Things around here really start to hop this time of year.
First of all, of course, is family time with the long Thanksgiving weekend. Then starts the real fun!
Right when we get back, we have Santa come visit and take pictures. Then we can't wait for the Super Saturday, Dec 6, and all the fun that brings. That day is so fun working with all the sweet church people and watching the children get so excited over the gifts they make. This year I can't wait to help the children dress up and act out the nativity story. There is true joy in helping little ones share the real excitement of Christmas.
Next on Wed, Dec 10th at 12 noon Lynn Flowers Preschool will have our Christmas Program and lunch. It is always so much fun to see the children sing and to be able to be a part of their Christmas activities. They are so thrilled to show off their talents to anyone who will listen. Please, consider this an invitation to join us for some Christmas spirit and lunch following.
The following week, I look forward to our own staff Christmas Luncheon which is always enjoyable and laughable. We will also have the Mid Day Noels ( Mariachis) to look forward to on Thursday, December 11, 2003 followed by Christmas class parties at the end of the week.
Although I can't say that I look forward to the shopping and the crowds of Christmas, I sure do look forward to the sounds and joys of Christmas through the eyes of little one. It just doesn't get much better than that! Have a wonderful, joyous Christmas Season.
Pat Simpson
Director of Lynn Flowers Preschool

The Life of the Church
Can you feel it?
Can you hear it?
Can you see it?

We have yet to stuff ourselves with Turkey and dressing, and yet, the spirit of Christmas is already jingling all about us.But when it comes to the life of this church, the spirit of Christ teems with fervor every day of every week of every month. You can definitely feel it, hear it and see it, 24/7.

One of our more vibrant events coming up this Saturday includes the “Hanging of the Greens,” an entertaining and fun-filled afternoon on Saturday, November 29, at 3:00 p.m. in which the Christmas tree is set up in the sanctuary and then beautifully decorated. Everyone is welcome to come and help spread some yuletide cheer while hanging banners and other assorted decorations in the sanctuary. Whether you can give a few minutes of your time, or an hour, you won’t want to miss what has become a memorable event discussed enthusiastically throughout the year.

And while you’re there helping hang things, you can have a family portrait taken to be hung at home during the season. The cost is $12.95 for two 4 x 6s and four wallet-sized pictures. Those will be available by Christmas.

Also in the next couple of weeks:

Sunday, November 30, is the 1st Sunday of Advent. Don’t forget to light your candle.

The First Wednesday dinner scheduled for December 3rd at 6 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall will feature “Christmas Readings” by Jan Seale and Jesse Thornton. And if you can’t have your family portrait snapped on November 29, you get another chance the night of the First Wednesday dinner when Alonso Photographers will be available for sittings. The cost is $12.95.

Then, on December 11th & 18th the church will present it's annual "Midday Noels." On the 11th the church will host a Mariachi group at 11:30 for the Lynn Flowers Preschool and at 12:00 they will lead us by procession into the church where we will listen to the Edinburg Madrigal Singers. On the 18th we will have an opportunity to listen to Dr. Terry Morris and Cynthia Douglas sing selected Christmas music.

So, after thanking God for all His many gifts, come celebrate the birth of Christ with your own touch of joy and glad tidings. We look forward to hearing and seeing you there.

Workshop Rotation Model
Did you notice Goliath in the Fellowship Hall recently? He is one of the creations of the kids involved in the elementary Sunday School program called Workshop Rotation Model or WoRM.Andrea Hudler has been a leader in this program since it’s inception 4 years ago.Next Fall Andrea will step down and we have some mighty big shoes to fill. Our hope is to have 3-4 people come forward to help out.Two would be needed to work 1-2 days over the summer to choose curriculum and two additional folks would be responsible for overseeing the monthly themes and workshops. If you’re willing to play even a small role in this important ministry please call Rebecca.

With Grateful Thanksgiving
Thank you Lord for friends and family
For many are alone
Thank you Lord for food and shelter
For many face hunger and cold
Thank you Lord for hope and faith
For many struggle on their own
For the richness of your gifts, for the vastness of your love
We thank you

Thanksgiving reminds us of the abundance of blessings we have.We all know the story of the first Thanksgiving and we’ve seen pictures of the Indians and Pilgrims sitting together sharing a feast, but it wasn’t always that way.

The Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock on December 11, 1620.That winter was one of the most devastating in history and 46 of the original 102 Pilgrims died before Spring in the harshness of the New World. It’s said that an average day’s food during that time was 3 kernels of corn per person. The harvest in the fall of 1621 was bountiful and the first Thanksgiving took place as we’ve always heard, but for just a moment think back to that winter in 1620.The Pilgrims were trying to build shelters, the snow and sleet were bearing down on them, and there was so little food that their energy must have been in short supply. There surely were days when they gathered and wondered why they had left their homeland or why God had forsaken them.Yet out of that time of struggle so much good has come. The Indians (who they initially mistrusted and feared) supported and sustained them through that first winter and it’s said they couldn’t have survived if it wasn’t for the natives.

This Thanksgiving as you sit down with your loved ones take 3 kernels of corn on your plate and thank God for what he did so many years ago in our countries history and then name 3 blessings you have to offer this year.May yours be a blessed time with those you love.Happy Thanksgiving!

The Agony of Adolescence
I remember Jr. High. What a tumultuous time in a kid’s life. My friends and I waited with anticipation to enter Jr. High School and on the first day the 8th graders delighted in such tricks as sending us 7th graders searching for the elevators (there were no elevators) or giving us the wrong combinations to get our lockers open. Oh well, it was a rite of passage. Those experiences were mild but they did wake me up to the fact that I was entering a new phase; this wasn’t elementary school anymore.

When kids enter Jr. High they are about to be flung from the safety and security of childhood into adolescence. They will soon be challenged on many levels including who their friends are, what their life style is, and what their religious beliefs are. This is the time when most kids are offered cigarettes, alcohol, or other drugs for the first time. It’s vital that the church is there to support them, listen to them, and give straight answers to the hard questions they’ll ask.

When I entered Jr. High my church didn’t have a program for the youth. Sure there were “religious instruction” type of activities but nothing to make me feel connected. I had no relationships with the other kids at church much less with the adults and I made some bad choices as a teenager. I wish we would have had a place where I could have asked questions and gotten advice from adults that I trusted. We are lucky to have a terrific Youth Fellowship group here. Lita Simpson has been working with kids for many many years here and I credit her with the numbers that we have in Youth Fellowship every Sunday night. It is a blessing for me to work with the young people in our church. They are fabulous. They care about the problems in the world today such as drugs, war, and the homeless. They are kind and thoughtful to each other and funny. We have a good time together and I empathize with their station in life, I wouldn’t want to go through adolescence again!
