Ciaran came to John Knox Ranch from Ireland several years ago as a summer counselor but something about the camp, campers, and the mission of John Knox Ranch has brought him on board full-time. He will be happy to meet with parents and campers after church to answer questions about camp and encourage first-timers! Camp schedules, costs, and information will be available for early sign-up!

Christian Education Corner: New Beginnings One of the things I loved about working in public education was the cyclical nature of it. It’s about seasons, about beginnings and endings. Every year is different: every year you start anew with a fresh batch of kids and a new mind set of the wonders you’ll accomplish. And so it is with each “New Year”. As we approach 2003 I look to God’s Word for commentary on “new”.
I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. Ezekiel 36:26
Therefore if anyone is new in Christ he is a new creation, the old has gone, the new has come. 2 Corinthians 5:17
It’s encouraging that as children of God we get all these chances for newness. To start again, to adopt a new spirit, to discard the yucky and bring in the refreshed/renewed. I wish for all of us that sense of the New Year and all it promises for our church and our nation.

Christian Education: It's Not Just For Kids The potential power of Christian education cannot be overestimated. Participation by children, adolescents, and adults in quality Christian education should be a top priority for all congregations.
Peter L. Benson Search Institute
As I peruse through the curriculums we’re using I’m struck with the importance of keeping our educational programs fresh and current. If done well, Christian education has more potential than any other area of congregational life to promote faith. Yet many people think of it as a ministry for children. This belief is reflected in a downward spiral of involvement according to The Search Institute. “While 60% of elementary age children within congregations actively participate in Christian education, the percentage drops to 52% for junior high youth, 35% for senior high youth, and 28% for adults.
We recently formed a youth sub-committee and are committed to keeping teenagers “plugged in” to church. Our work with youth is recognized in this community and the efforts of Lita Simpson, David Rowland, Kelly Leonard, Kurt Paton, and Mary Cloud should not go unnoticed. But despite the good things they do for and with our young people, it takes more than just their work to keep Youth Group alive. It takes parents who support the notion that Christian education is vital to their child’s spiritual growth and it takes the church as a whole to assist with and support Youth Sponsors.
Parade magazine, December 8, had an article titled “Should Parents Make Kids Attend Religious Services?” The question was answered by kids 14-19 years old and 6 out of 8 kids said “yes” that parents should make kids attend religious services citing reasons such as “church giving me a seed from which to grow my faith” and “church formed who I am- my values and ideals.”
I wonder how our kids at FPC would answer that question?
