KEEP IT SIMPLE, KEEP IT SPIRITUAL By our very nature, we humans strive toward sophistication and complexity of life. Some people seek greater sophistication and complexity than others, but the very nature of human progress has caused our lives to become more and more complicated over the centuries. Our lives are filled with goals, projects, and activities that make them feel chaotic. Sometimes these are thrust on us by the necessities of life, but more often we thrust them on ourselves.
On a spiritual level, complicated living is a killer, because it not only kills our spirit, it creates walls around us that block God’s Spirit. Complicated living makes us slaves to time. When we live complicated lives, we live according to the clock. Time becomes our god. It enslaves us by making us forever focused on what is next. It also makes us slaves to convention and conformity. In other words, we keep doing the same things the same way that everyone else has done them. We lose the ability to seek creative ways to live our lives. We are robed of the ability to appreciated life. We can end up becoming so focused on what we want or have to do that we fail to appreciate much of the world around us. We fail to appreciate what’s important. We take our health, relationships, and much of our lives for granted. We see this all the time with people who are so focused on their careers that they fail to appreciate their families, their friends, or even just the basic joys of life. Finally, complicated living robs us of the ability to really trust God. Most of us want God to make a commitment to our lives. At the same time, because our lives are so hassled, hurried, and hectic we are not willing to make the same kind of commitment to God. One of my favorite passages of scripture comes from Proverbs. It says,
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge him, And he will make straight your paths. Proverbs 3: 5-6
This passage is saying that there is a connection between what God does and what we do. Our trust in God actually creates an opening for God to enter into our lives. According to the proverb, it is only when we trust and acknowledge God that God makes straight our paths.

PAT'S PRIDE It ought to get pretty quiet around here after this week. I know sometimes we enjoy quiet, but the joy and the laughter of these kids only add enjoyment to each one of our days. I want to take this moment to thank you for the opportunity you have given us to serve God, the church, and the community here at Lynn Flowers Presbyterian Preschool. We consider this to be a place where God can use us as missionaries to both the children and their families. You, as a church are an intrical part of this mission by your support and by your commitment to assure that the school continues. Thank you from all of us for giving us such a wonderful place and environment to serve our Lord. See you soon.

INTERIM PASTOR SEARCH During its April 12th meeting, the Church Session elected Wileen King, Walter Passmore and Michael Pullen to an ad hoc committee to begin the search for an interim pastor. The committee has since been in touch with the Mission Presbytery to help in this endeavor. If any member of the congregation has suggestions or names they would like to submit in reference to this process, please contact one of the three previously mention members. Your prayers regarding this matter will also be greatly appreciated.

PAT'S PRIDE As many of you already know, this past week the body of my little sister was found in San Antonio after being missing for over a week. Of course, this has been sad for our family and anxious as we surely wanted an answer. I thank God that we do know that now she is with Jesus which is so much better than not knowing where she was. There are still many things we do not know for sure such as whether she did this herself or someone else did it to her. The police tell us it may be up to a year before we have all the answers so I guess we will learn to be patient. I would ask you to pray for the truth to be revealed. The reason I write al this to you is to ask for a prayer, but also to let you know how very special all of you are and the staff here. Everyone has been so supportive, so thoughtful, so concerned that it cannot help but encourage a person. And the innocence and love of the children always gives me a lift and helps me to know that just as the plaque in my office says "A child is God's way of saying the world should go on". I am so thankful that I have God. A God who know all, sees all, comforts all, has justice for all, and most of all, controls all. It's pretty easy to place yourself in the arms of that kind of father. Thank you for your love.

Humility is a Virtue Who’s on your board? Your board of directors, that is. Picture a large distinguished looking table in a boardroom. The table seats 8-10 people. Around the table are the people who’ve had the biggest impact on your life, positive or negative. They could be living or deceased.
One person on my board is my step-sister, Gale. Yes, that’s how you spell her name, it fits her. She’s like a blast of fresh air. Gale has been a nurse, a firefighter, an artist, and has led spiritual retreats. She’s something else. We became sisters when she was 20 and I was 16. My dad and her mom (Elly) were married for 17 years before Elly died from Hepatitus C. Gale has always held a special place in my heart. She’s an adventurer and has plenty of stories to prove it. Actually every time I see her I leave with another great Gale story. But one of Gale’s greatest attributes is humility. In spite of all her accomplishments, she doesn’t vie for the limelight. There’s enough of her that she can give to others. And she listens. It’s such a gift to have someone really listen, to let go of their agenda and take in the needs of someone else.
In Discovering the Narrow Path, Graham Standish notes, “humility is the foundation of all spiritual growth. The way to begin humbling our hearts is look at ourselves, not through our own eyes, but through God’s. As we recognize our own weakness and frailty, we realize the importance of treating others well for they, also, are fragile. Humility increases our compassion.”
I hear that’s what humbling yourself before God is all about. If you’ll just open up, God will listen. The mystics discovered that God is around every corner holding out presents to us if we’ll but stop and spend time. Can we make the time? by Rebecca Villarreal, DCE
