SERVE YOUR CHURCH There are many ways in which you can serve your church. One of those ways is to volunteer some time this summer to answer the phone in the church office while our church secretary is on vacation. Please consider giving some time on the following dates: June 16th - 18th, 23rd - 25th, and July 21st - 23rd. (A couple, or a few hours or a day if possible). Call the church office if you can volunteer some time.

The Lessons Children Teach Us The halls of FPC were filled with the sounds of children again this week. The Lynne Flowers’ preschoolers have been on vacation since mid May and those of us who work in the church miss them when they’re gone. This week, however, many of them were back for our Vacation Bible School. Their being here has put a spring in my step, for there’s nothing like children to bring out the joy in ones’ soul.
I learned as a young teacher how the spirit of a child seeps into your very being and permeates you, changes you somehow. In my first teaching job here in the Valley, I had a 4th grade classroom with only 3 children, Samantha, Eric, and Rafael. They were as different as could be and all of them had a lesson to teach me. Samantha was sophisticated and worldly. She wasn’t afraid to speak her mind, yet she wore her heart on her sleeve. She taught me that it’s okay to stand up for yourself even if you shed a tear or two doing so. Eric was an artist. He was introspective and deep. He had a gentle heart but had had a tough life and didn’t take anything from anybody. From him I learned that not everybody has your best interest at heart. Rafael was a teddy bear. He loved unconditionally and demonstratively. He stole his mom’s jewelry that year to give me for Christmas, not because he wanted to take away from her, but because he so wanted to give and he had no money to buy anything.
Jesus knew the value that children bring to our lives. He taught that we should come to him as children: pure, honest, without agendas. My prayer for this church is that it’s halls will always be filled with the laughter of children. Amen. Rebecca Villarreal, DCE

TREASURER'S REPORT After Sunday, May 2, First Presbyterian Church (FPC) faced a modest deficit of $3,442 when total revenues were compared with a target figure. Four weeks later (May 30) that same modest deficit had ballooned to $15,181.
The sharp revenue decline in May is atypical; generally June and July are the poor revenue months for FPC. To be down by $15,181 after five months and facing June and July is a bit discomforting. It means that the staff will have to continue to look carefully at expenditures. It also means the congregation must review and update pledges and contributions if we are to meet our expectations for FPC. Let us continue to work on the gap between revenue and projected expenditures, and let us continue to thank God for His grace and love and for the abundant blessings He has bestowed upon us.
John Graham Treasurer
