TO ALL 6TH, 7TH, AND 8TH GRADERS Plan to attend Sunday School this fall where we will: DIVE INTO THE ADVENTURES OF THE OLD TESTAMENT AS WE DISCOVER THE LIFE THAT GOD WANTS US TO LIVE...and speaking of DIVING, let's also capture the wonderful spirit of NEMO, which teaches us many life lessons: PLEASE go to see FINDING NEMO sometime this summer--Come on--take you little brother or sister, or go with a group of other crazy kids. Call me and I will take you--I want to see it again. Nemo and his friends teach us many of the lessons in the Bible that we will be learning so we will be talking about it a lot. SOOOOOOO...just when you thought you were all grown up and mature as junior highers, you find out that all the important stuff about God and Life and You is in a fish cartoon. ISN'T LIFE FULL OF SURPRISES????? Patti Koo

How to Stay Safe in the World Today
- Avoid riding in automobiles because they are responsible for 20% of all fatal accidents.
- Do not stay home because 17% of all accidents occur in the home.
- Avoid walking on streets or sidewalks because 14% of all accidents occur to pedestrians.
- Avoid traveling by air, rail, or water because 16% of fall accidents involve these forms of transportation.
- Of the remaining 33%, 32% of all deaths occur in hospitals. Above all else, avoid hospitals.
You will be pleased to learn that only .001% of all deaths occur in worship services in church, and these are usually related to previous physical disorders. Therefore, logic tells us that the safest place for you to be at any given point in time is at church! Bible study is safe too. The percentage of deaths during Bible study is even less.
FOR SAFETY’S SAKE – Attend church and read your Bible….IT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE! Submitted by FPC Youth

FROM THE CHRISTIAN EDUCATION DIRECTOR We have worship bags available to help your child participate in Worship on Sundays. Items are placed in the bags for ages 4 yrs old to jr. high school. The white bags are in the narthex and are available for pre-school children. For kids in 1st grade and older, their bags will be in the front of the sanctuary and can be picked up after the childrens sermon. We want to encourage our 1st graders and older to participate in the prayers and readings that happen in the early part of the service. Thanks for your help. Rebecca Villarreal

Second Quarter Finance Committee Report The finance committee is working on its Second Quarter Report that will be presented to the session in August. Major developments included in this report are summarized here.
The roofing project was completed, some much needed rain was received, and so far, no leaks. The total cost was approximately $100,000, and payment was made with monies pledged by members of this congregation and the new H.M. King Memorial Fund 10-year, 2.5%, $50,000 note. The King Fund loan also enabled us to retire the $32,000 balance on the Texas State Bank note, and FPC’s monthly debt payment has been reduced from $1,000 to $466. Currently, the balance in the capital account stands at $15,000 plus.
The changeover from CPL to Just Energy was recently completed, and further savings are anticipated when electric bills from Just Energy are received as part of a two-year agreement. Kudos to those who in 2001-2003 pledged a total of $118,535 for the remodeling of the fellowship hall. To date, $115,892 of that pledge has been received with only $2,642 outstanding. Response on the roof project pledge has also been excellent. Of the $108,885 pledged, $68,206 has been received with $40,678 due in 2003, 2004 and 2005.
What is the church’s financial condition as the second half of 2003 begins? On the expense side, the June Financial Report shows $199,495 in budgeted expenses paid from a 2003 budget of $389,000. Average monthly expenses rose slightly during the 2nd quarter as energy costs went up, but the staff continued to be frugal with a tight budget.
The revenue picture is even better. After 6 months, revenues totaled $210,143, a plus of $10,648 over budgeted expenses. Through June 30, $195,100 has been received from the $364,000 amount pledged for 2003. Income from royalties and loose offerings is also up some from 2002.
The outcome of these developments is that the church is now in a better position to plan for and meet program and benevolence responsibilities and to address infrastructure needs, such as air conditioning upgrades and repairs. Our thanks to members of the congregation, the staff and the session for all you have done and all you continue to do. Let us praise and thank God for His many blessings upon this church. John Graham

TUESDAY MORNING PRAYER What are you doing each Tuesday at 7:00 am in the morning? How about spending some time in prayer with those who gather each week in the parlor? Yes, it requires the discipline to get up early and begin the day with prayer. The time is informal and we share joys, concerns, and celebrations. All are welcome.

OUR SUMMER SUNDAY SCHOOL CONTINUES This is a special time at 9:00 am in our Fellowship Hall for people of all ages. We gather as one family to sing, celebrate, and discuss. For the next three Sundays (July 13, 20, and 27) Reverend Thornton will be leading the class on the theme “Peacemaking in the Family by Mister Rogers.” So why is peacemaking needed within families? Perhaps because the level of emotion and caring is so deep. Those whom we love so much are also the subjects of our dreams and the objects of our frustration, anger, and disappointment. For all the times in which we reach out to nurture and support the ones we love, there are also times of crisis and stress when we do not know how to respond to, or how to include, the other members of our family. Come and learn more the next three Sundays.
