RALLY DAY
We will kick off the new Sunday School year on September 7 with Rally Day. We will have breakfast in the Fellowship Hall at 9:00 AM and find out about the classes offered this Fall. There will be time to meet the teachers and take a tour to familiarize yourself with the resource areas in our church. We have some neat things on tap for the Fall so plan to join us.

The Perfect Storm
Lori called on Thursday evening and said, “Have you seen the weather? A tropical storm is headed this way and should reach Brownsville by Saturday morning.”

AHHH!!! I don’t know about you but I’ve not been through a hurricane or a tropical storm. I felt unprepared. We had so little time to plan. We had our tracking map but I wasn’t sure what else I needed to be “storm ready.” Isn’t that the nature of storms though? To hit when you’re not ready? According to my dictionary one definition of storm is: to assault or overwhelm with sudden force. We’re caught off guard, just hoping and praying we have the skills and the instinct to get us through. Lucky for us Tropical Storm Erika was pretty close to “The Perfect Storm.” It dumped some much needed rain on us but didn’t do any damage.

Other storms I’ve weathered haven’t been so gentle, they fall into the “when it rains it pours” category. Like the time when within a month our house flooded, Lauren was having major problems in her preschool, and I had a “crisis of faith” with the church we were attending. I prayed hoping to understand why all of those things were happening. There must be a reason that three areas in my life had gone haywire. When I thought and prayed some more I realized that my home, my child, and my spiritual life were in desperate need of my attention. When they all went kaput at once I had no choice but to turn from the other things that were distracting me and take notice.

Do you believe God does that? He uses situations or people to get our attention? Well it worked for me, it was a wake up call…. wake up and smell the rain.

The Life of the Church
Just as things are beginning to cool down outside (well, it’s not triple digits anymore!), things are starting to heat up around FPC-McAllen.Our youth have resumed classes and regular Sunday School is just around the corner. Earmark September 7 on your church calendar because that’s the date set aside for Rally Day, the annual kickoff to our Christian Education program here at FPC. Rally Day consists of a breakfast at 9 a.m. inside the Fellowship Hall followed by an informational forum explaining each of the new classes. Then, take a tour of our church’s resources and the classrooms and meet this year’s teachers along the way.

Also in September

● Our newest set of Confirmands, six in all, will be introduced to the congregation on the 7th along with their parents, their individual partners and the group’s teachers as they begin a seven-month journey towards confirmation into the church.

● Make a note that communion, usually celebrated on the first Sunday of the month, will instead be conducted next month on the 14th.

● The Taize Service resumes on the 21st at 6 p.m. inside the Fellowship Hall. Look for this popular meditative service to continue thereafter on the third Sunday of each month.

Before the month of August completely races by, however, we will welcome Gary Mathews to the pulpit this coming Sunday. Gary is Development Director for Su Casa Esperanza and an active participant in Mission Presbytery.

Kudos!
We have a new person in charge of bulletin boards and she’s doing a terrific job. Nadine Force has 30 years experience in education and has graciously agreed to take over the title of “Bulletin Board Diva”. Please take a moment to thank Nadine for the great work she’s done to keep our church bulletin boards up to date and lookin’ great!

Ng Parker was a big help to CE this summer by mending and cleaning all the costumes used by the WoRM class. Thanks so much, Ng!

Carol Moore lent her sewing skills to CE this summer and made 20 table runners for the Intergenerational Sunday School class. They were beautiful and we really appreciate Carol for helping out!

Confirmation Classes
Plans are in place for Confirmation classes to start in September.
A team of adults have been working hard over the summer to make the Confirmation experience meaningful and educational for our youth. We will have 5-6 young people participating in this process which will include class time, retreats, service projects, and visiting other churches. We would appreciate your prayers as our young people take this important step in building their faith.

New Beginnings
It’s almost that time of year again. So pull out the party hats, grab a noisemaker, and throw some confetti. Happy New Year!! Yep, for those of us in education the new year doesn’t begin on January 1, but rather when the first school bell rings ushering in a new learning year, a new beginning. I loved that as a teacher; A beginning and an end. Each September when school started I was bright eyed and bushy tailed, ready for that year’s crop of eager students. I’d bring back my tried and true techniques but I always had a few new things to try out on the kids. Whether they worked or not I always learned something, and when the year ended I was better for the influence of those little lives on mine.

New beginnings are a good thing for all of us. We take the summer to renew, refresh, reform, restock, and reevaluate so that when the new year starts we’re ready. And ready we are! Rally Sunday will be on September 7 and we have some of the tried and true and some of the new and shiny. Many of our teachers from last year will be returning but also some new faces will be joining our team. Rosemary Childers will be working with our preschoolers, John and Susie Miller as well as Doug Schneider will be teaching the high school group, and Drue Wilkes along with Woody Thompson will be teaching an adult class from The Present Word. We will be using a new curriculum called “We Believe” in many of our classes and I’m excited about the things we will all discover in the new year. Hope to see you on September 7.
