The Life of The Church Are you ready for some fun? If there’s one thing the First Presbyterian Church of McAllen can never be accused of, it would have to be boredom.
The next two weeks at FPC, for example, are packed with a varying array of activities designed for the young and old alike.
In fact, this coming Sunday, October 24, will be one of the busiest days of the month for us. That will be Youth Sunday, a very special day in the life of this church in which our Senior and Junior High youth groups will share in leading the Worship Service at 10:30 a.m. Come watch and enjoy our future leaders in action as they assume the roles for guiding us down the path of God through their unique blend of liturgy, music and preaching.
Immediately following that morning’s Worship Service, a Congregational Meeting will be held in the sanctuary for the purpose of electing six new elders, two elders to fill two non-expired terms and one Youth Elder for the Class of 2007.
As soon as the Congregational Meeting concludes, a Potluck Luncheon will be served up in the Fellowship Hall. Each family that wishes to attend is asked to bring two dishes – one main dish and one side dish (salad, vegetable or dessert) – with each dish capable of serving at least eight persons.
After the Potluck Luncheon, the Senior Highs will get together for their weekly meeting. This will replace the regularly scheduled evening function, so parents make note of the change.
Also, over the course of the next two weeks numerous other events will be taking place at FPC, including:
- Tuesday, October 19 – Taize Service, Fellowship Hall, 7 p.m. Shut out the noise and bustle of every day life and worship God in a meditative setting that incorporates song and praise with silent reflection.
- Sunday, October 24 – The newest members to FPC will be recognized and received into our church family during the Worship Service. And don’t forget to bring your canned goods which can be placed in the Grocery Cart offering for our monthly donation to the Rio Grande Valley Food Bank.
- Wednesday, October 27, 5:30 to 8:00 – Fall Festival. Get ready for a spooky and fun-filled time inside the Fellowship Hall and on the church grounds that evening.
- Every Wednesday – Morning Bible Study, Parlor, 10 a.m.; Youth Choir practice and Adult Handbells practice, upstairs, 6 p.m.; Adult Choir practice, Choir Room, 7 p.m.
In addition, mark you calendars for the annual Kirken ‘O Tartans to be held on Sunday, October 31,during the morning Worship Service at 10:30 a.m. Highlighted by the procession of banners and the playing of bagpipes, we honor our Scottish ancestors with the traditional style of worship dating back to the 1700s.
Come one, come all and praise God with youthful exuberance! The Worship/Evangelism Committee

CONFIRMATION RETREAT Three of our Confirmands and five adults set out for South Padre Island last weekend for a time of togetherness and learning. This years Confirmation class is made up of Robert Douglas, Garrett Garfield, Emily Koo, and Sarah Sparks. They have begun the process which will lead up to full membership in the church if they chose. We are really proud of this group and look forward to a year of discovery and bonding. Please keep them as well as their Covenant Partners, Jesse Thornton, James Barnes, Carolyn Gillies, and Andrea Hudler in your prayers as they work through this journey. A big thank you to Pat Moyer for the use of her Condo and to Eng Parker for cooking for us.

The Fall camp is set for November 12-14. Kirsten Kelso, formerly of Mo Ranch, is now the Program Manager at John Knox. Those of us who know Kirsten know she’ll have great events lined up so check into it! Brochures are located in the narthex.

Why Are We Here? That was the question posed to the Confirmands last weekend at a retreat. They are beginning a year- long study, which will ideally culminate in active membership in the church. It’s a rite of passage and has similarities to the bar mitzvah or bat mitzvah in the Jewish faith. Young people spend the year learning about God and their religion as they prepare for mature participation and service in the church. One young person asked, “What will I get to do after going through this?” An elder answered by saying, “You’re asking the wrong question. It’s not about you getting something, it’s about you taking on responsibilities.”
Those responsibilities are spelled out in the marks of membership (Book of Order G-5.0102). We spent a great deal of time reviewing the ways Christ calls us to be involved in his church. It was the first exposure for some and a review for others. We had great discussions about how each of the 9 marks can be demonstrated in the life of the church. The second mark of membership states that our involvement includes taking part in the common life and worship of a particular church. The Confirmands named things such as attending events, getting involved, and helping out. Studies have been done, however, which point out that people go to a particular church because they like the minister or because that church has good programs or because it’s close to their house or because they have friends there. Many of us have chosen a church for one of those reasons but in order to grow in our faith we’ve got to get in there and let God work through us.
The day after we returned from our retreat one of the Confirmands came up to me and asked if he could get some information on the “Pennies for Piggies” program that the WoRM class is involved in this year. He wanted to collect pennies at his school and bring them to us to help buy pigs for Guatemalan families. He’s really taken the concept of involvement in his church seriously and I was inspired by his interest in getting involved. May God lead all of us to find our place in service to him. by Rebecca Villarreal, DCE

Pat's Pride Have you noticed that fall is everywhere around us. It's in the stores, pumpkins all about us, it's all over the walls at preschool. The only place I haven't seen much of fall is in our own trees. That's one of the saddest parts of living in the valley is we miss the beautiful fall color in our leaves. One of the fun parts of fall is coming up soon for all of us at the preschool. The church Fall Festival is right around the corner, October 27 from 5:30 - 8:00. It is always a joyful evening full of laughter and cute costumes. We look forward to this time when we all celebrate fall together. Pat Simpson, Director of Lynn Flowers Preschool
