Pondering our Growth (November 1, 2006) It is strange how things come to mind. One minute you are thinking about one thing. Then the next minute, you are wondering how something entirely different fits into life.
Such happened to me as I sat pondering our young visitors to the Godly Play” Sunday School Class on October 1st. Their paraents had attended the “Meet the Church Staff” open house in late September where information was shared by your interim pastor and Director of Christian Education.
That lead me to wonder what the barriers are to church growth when we had 13 visitors in church and at least 5 visitors in Sunday School on October 1st. What could be keeping us from growing when there are so many people moving into the area? We are gaining more members than we are losing, but we aren’t gaining in proportion to the population growth in the McAllen area.
Is it our location? Do people even know that we are her? Could it be our style of worship? Do we have a common vision of what we want to be and do as a church? Do we want to change or just keep it like before (whatever that means)?
If we keep it like before, how many potential members are interested in the same style of worship that we enjoy? How many potential members are interested in joining a church which hasn’t changed in basic worship service structure since the 70’s?
Going through the files, I found a Worship bulletin from late ’75 and you could have substituted it for one last week. Is that a negative or a positive? Are we limiting the % of population from which we can draw new members?
But then I am full of questions which only you can answer. I think we will survive as a church if we don’t do anything different. I also think we will reach more potential members if we add to rather than change our core program. Let me know what you think.
See you in church,
O’Quin
