A Season of Thanksgiving (April 14, 2005) It has been a week since my letter of March 30, 2005, announcing that after May I will no longer be the pastor of First Presbyterian Church. It was a difficult letter to send, and while it may have come to you as surprise, I have appreciated the calls and conversations from so many of you to express your support to Dottie and me. As all of us move into a new chapter in our lives I want to keep “thanksgiving” as our guide over the next few weeks. I will have more to say about that between now and May 15, my last Sunday here. When I met with our Session last week I mentioned that I wanted that last Sunday to be a worship of thanksgiving and praise to God. There will be a lot of music that day and that is an appropriate way to give thanks. There are so many people and events I am thankful for that it will take me all this time to express my thanks. So let me begin this season in a general way by expressing my thanks to all of you who are members here and to those who either attend worship or read our newsletter. My joy has been the opportunity to spend these four years with you.
In our Presbyterian Church USA the emphasis quickly moves, as it should, to the future of the Church. This Church will move to new pastoral leadership and the Session will need your support and prayers before an interim pastor will be selected. I know many of you will step up and assist the pastoral leaders. Because all of you will do your part of your reasonable service to the Lord, you will be blessed, as you are a blessing to others. How can members of the Church help? The greatest help would be to continue in your worship attendance, stewardship, and to support the transition procedures as established by the Presbyterian Church. What a testimony to Jesus Christ, the Head of the Church, to remain faithful in the interim period and beyond. That kind of faithfulness was attractive to me when I came here four years ago and will be encouraging to new leadership as it emerges in the months to come.
Thank you for being who you are and your prayerful support.
